Cybersecurity Specialist I

The Opportunity:

The entry-level Cybersecurity Specialist I will serve the Morgridge Institute for Research in cybersecurity and network protection and will also work with the advanced networking and computing infrastructure for the Discovery Building in support of world-renowned top researchers. In addition, they will work with software, systems, and network personnel to ensure the security, availability, and continuous operation of the facility.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Perform internal security audits and vulnerability analysis, then assist the Morgridge systems security specialist with monitoring tasks, documentation, reviewing security systems, and looking for anomalies that may compromise Morgridge’s security
  • Provide assistance to ensure systems are configured as securely as possible without compromising usability and are current with the latest software releases and security patches
  • Work with networking personnel to architect and design network-based security tools, including firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and routing and access policies
  • Monitor infrastructure efforts periodically and provide assessment reports to management on status and recommendations for security improvements
  • Provide documentation of all security systems and processes
  • Assist with maintaining records, logs and reports of security audits and issues
  • Maintain and contribute to documentation
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and Experience:

  • An associate degree in information technology or computer science or equivalent work experience; bachelor’s degree in information technology or computer science is preferred
  • One to two years of infrastructure/network support or related IT experience
  • Experience related to cybersecurity or network/risk management is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Candidates will need to possess strong attention to detail and excellent organization skills

  • Introductory knowledge of technology environments including LAN/WAN, Linux, Windows, Apple/Mac; MS Office, Active Directory, and Exchange; Adobe products and web conferencing solutions; desktop support and telecommunications

  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Basic understanding of security fundamentals
  • Familiarity with NIST guidance
